Just 10 minutes from our Palazzo Vecchietti hotel, you can reach the Accademia Gallery, one of the most important museums of Italy. Its popularity can be attributed to the fact that, among many masterpieces of the Renaissance art, you can admire the original Michelangelo's David. In 1873 the sculpture was brought to the Accademia from its previous location in Piazza Signoria for reasons of conservation.
At the moment of the museum's construction the intention was to create a 'Michelangelo museum', but today, the gallery contains many other paintings and sculptures including a small collection of Michelangelo's work like the Prisoners and a statue of Saint Matthew and a Pietà discovered in the Barberini chapel in Palestrina.
Other works on display are Florentine paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, including works by Paolo Uccello, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli and Andrea del Sarto; and, from the High Renaissance, Giambologna's original plaster for the Rape of the Sabine Women. As well as a number of Florentine Gothic paintings, the gallery houses the idiosyncratic collection of Russian icons assembled by the Grand Dukes of the House of Lorraine, of which Leopoldo was one.
